ABOUT PROJECT

Tricycle is a childcare app that connects families and nannies with a focus on flexibility and affordability. As a Founding UX designer, I'm leading end-to-end UX design process.

overview

We tailored app experiences to address the unique needs of parents and nannies, creating customized experiences for each type of user

We started by exploring parents' challenges in childcare. Next, we extended our research to nannies. Finally, we investigated the concept of nanny share, where families share childcare resources, to identify opportunities for more flexible and affordable care solutions. This iterative process informed our design approach and ensured we addressed the needs of all stakeholders.

research phase 1: Parents

research phase 1: Parents

First, we talked to 20 parents in New York City to understand their struggles

In our interviews with parents, we found that while parents preferred hiring full-time nannies to provide personalized care, the cost often made this option unaffordable. Even daycare, although somewhat less expensive, presents its own challenges, particularly inflexibility, as most daycares do not offer evening care. The process of finding a nanny was described as stressful and uncertain, especially for first-time parents.

Research phase 2: NANNIES

As we explored deeply, we discovered nannies are key stakeholders and conducted surveys and interviews with nannies

Through our collaboration with the Carroll Gardens Association, we engaged with 22 nannies to uncover deeper systemic issues. Many nannies, particularly those who are people of color, immigrants, or face language barriers, are in vulnerable positions.

highlights

We identified conflicting needs between parents and nannies

Parents seek flexible, affordable care, while nannies struggle for job security and fair compensation. This conflict creates a complex problem that demands innovative and balanced solutions.

Challenge

How might we make childcare more affordable, flexible, and reliable for parents while benefiting nannies?

Research phase 3: NANNy share

We explored the traditional form of Nanny Share as a solution to affordable childcare

*Nanny Share is where two families hire one nanny and split the costs.

We discovered through our interviews that while some families had attempted nanny share arrangements to address their financial burden, many found the process difficult and ultimately unsuccessful.

Theory of change

We presented potential solutions to current barriers and user interest increased by 20%

Through our research and surveys with 18 parents, we found that while 80% recognized the financial advantages of nanny share, only 40% were interested in pursuing it. When presented with potential solutions to these barriers, interest in nanny share increased to 60%, indicating a strong demand for a more flexible and structured approach.

solution

Nanny Squad: nanny sharing with flexibility and inclusivity

Nanny Squad is a neighborhood-based childcare community centered around a host family that employs a full-time nanny. When a host family opens a Nanny Squad, other families with matching needs can join as guest families. This concept differs from traditional nanny share, where two families simply split the cost of hiring a full-time nanny.

Design goals

We aimed to simplify the user experience for all types of users with varying digital literacy

To ensure the app remains functional for everyday use for users, including nannies with varying levels of digital literacy, it must offer a user-friendly interface that simplifies tasks, reduces complexity, and makes navigation easy for all users.

information architecture

We mapped out the entire structure to support the holistic journey of nanny employment

From connecting each other to managing employment, we aimed to make Tricycle the one-stop app that users interact with every day.

multiple User types

We defined the 3 types of users for Tricycle–Host Family, Guest Family, and Nanny

Host Families are those who currently employ a full-time nanny and want to lower the costs and increase their children's socialization. Guest Families are looking for affordable childcare that is flexible and reliable.

Onboarding: user flow

The onboarding process categorizes user roles and shows customized contents

Service blueprint

We identified the essential touchpoints between users to support the smooth setup of Nanny Squad

It was essential to map out their interactions and the features of the app. By creating a service blueprint, we identified three important touchpoints where these users intersect, ensuring the system is cohesive and user-friendly.

matching list: components

Based on each user's needs, we generate Customized Matching Lists with compatibility rate and essential information

When creating a Nanny Squad, it's vital for parents to know the distances from other families and the ages of their children, while also considering the nannies' years of experience, certifications, and background check details.

Matching list & message: user flow

We ensured smooth interview arrangements through in-app messaging, followed by a matching list of families, nannies, or Nanny Squads

Matching List & In-App Message

Profiles are ranked by compatibility percentage, making it easier for users to identify the best match for their needs. Pre-generated messages tailored to each situation allow families and nannies to communicate efficiently, making scheduling and discussions easier.

Manage: User flow

We mapped out the user flow for the Manage tab, tailoring it to each user role throughout the employment journey

The Manage tab adapts to the unique roles of Guest Families, Host Families, and Nannies, guiding them through scheduling interviews, starting employment, and handling payments.

Manage: wireframes

The Manage tab supports users in conducting interviews and processing weekly payments

The Manage tab guides users through every stage of childcare coordination. Parents and nannies can schedule interviews, access customized guides, and manage payments seamlessly. Each feature is designed to simplify complex processes, ensuring an efficient and user-friendly experience for all roles.

Payment Support & Breakdown

After joining a squad, the Manage tab helps users review their weekly hours, balances, and a detailed breakdown of costs, including shared hours between guest and host families.

Next Steps

Usability testing and user recruitment

Developing the platform for launch

Usability testing will be conducted with three user types: Host Family, Guest Family, and Nanny. Following the testing phase, design revisions will be implemented before moving into app development. After launch, reliable professional nannies will be recruited through a partnership with the Caroll Garen Nanny Association. By establishing a trusted pool of nannies, the service will build credibility with parents, creating a strategy to attract more users.
